Nirvana: A Story of Buddhist Psychology

What is Nirvana?

WHEN HEN Anuruddha had finished the story of the hare he said to Sudatta: "To live means to die. No creature that breathes the breath of life can escape death. All com-posite things will be dissolved again. Noth-ing can escape dissolution. But good deeds do not die. They abide forever. This is the gist of the Abhidharma. He who dares to sur-render to death that which belongs to death will live on and will finally attain to the blessed state of Nirvana."

"What is Nirvana?" asked the youth.

Anuruddha replied by quoting the words of the Great Master saying:

"When the ûre of lust is gone out then Nirvâna is gained.

"When the flames of hatred and illusion have become extinct then Nirvana is gained.

About The Author Paul Carus

Paul Carus (1852–1919) was a German-American philosopher editor and author best known for his efforts to bridge Eastern and Western thought. Born in Ilsenburg Germany Carus earned a doctorate in philosophy before emigrating to the United States in 1884. He settled in La Salle Illinois where he became managing editor of The Open Court and The Monist two influential journals that promoted science philosophy and comparative religion.

Carus was deeply influenced by both Enlightenment rationalism and Asian spirituality. Though not a practicing Christian he described himself as a "religious non-theist" and believed in a universal truth underlying all faiths. He maintained close associations with leaders of the Buddhist revival including Anagarika Dharmapala and Soyen Shaku and collaborated with Japanese scholar D.T. Suzuki helping introduce Zen Buddhism to the West.

One of his most influential works is The Gospel of Buddha (1894) a retelling of the life and teachings of the Buddha using accessible language and Western literary style. This book became a foundational text in early American Buddhism.
